Reclaiming Your True Self: Navigating Identity in an Age of Social Contagion
Episode summary
Luke Burgis explores the critical distinction between a “solid self” and a “pseudo self” in an age of pervasive social contagion, arguing that true selfhood requires active differentiation within communities rather than mere tribal belonging. He highlights Murray Bowen’s family systems theory, which posits that individuals often fuse emotionally within their families, developing a “pseudo self” that constantly renegotiates beliefs and emotions to avoid tension. Burgis vividly illustrates this with the story of August Landmesser, a man who, amidst a sea of Nazi salutes in 1936, defiantly stood with his arms crossed, embodying a “solid self” formed through personal conviction despite immense social pressure and mortal risk.
The practical takeaway is to cultivate a solid self by intentionally examining one’s beliefs, using “I” statements, and embracing healthy tension within groups. This means resisting the urge to instantly resolve discomfort or conform to a “hive conscience,” even in seemingly trivial situations like group gossip. While cutting off relationships is an easy, undifferentiated path, true differentiation, as Bowen defines it, involves maintaining relationships as a distinct, self-aware individual.
By Luke Burgis (as told to Big Think)
In an era saturated with digital connections and the incessant hum of online communities, the very notion of “self” is under siege. We are constantly searching for our tribe, our people, a place to belong. Yet, paradoxically, the ease with which we find these communities often leads to a profound loss: the erosion of our unique identity. Luke Burgis, founder and director of the Clooney Institute and author of Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life and The 99: Forging Identity in the Age of Social Contagion, argues that the most critical challenge of our time isn’t finding our tribe, but rather, learning how to exist within it without losing ourselves.
Burgis unveils two fundamental levels of self: the “solid self” and the “pseudo self.” He then explores the three pervasive temptations of the screen – thinner rites of passage, curiositas, and acedia – that actively undermine our ability to cultivate a robust, authentic identity. Ultimately, he calls for a courageous act of differentiation, a conscious effort to forge an “I” that can stand firm amidst the powerful currents of social contagion.
The Allure and Peril of Tribes: A Double-Edged Sword
While finding a tribe offers comfort and validation, the real challenge is existing within it without losing oneself, a process called differentiation, which is crucial for healthy community and individual maturity.
Every year, countless books promise to help us find our tribe. The internet, in particular, has made tribal affiliation easier than ever, immersing us in communities, often on a daily basis, that validate our thoughts and feelings. We pick and choose tribes as needed, seeking comfort and affirmation. But Burgis poses a more urgent question: “What do you do once you’ve actually found your tribe? Then what? How do you exist within the tribe in a healthy way so that you don’t lose yourself within it?”
This question highlights a fundamental tension within human nature: our innate drive for uniqueness and recognition, coupled with a deep-seated need for communion and belonging. We want to be known by name, not as a number in a crowd, yet we fear being alone. This tension, Burgis asserts, is healthy. When we flee from it, we fall into the extremes of individualism or collectivism. True, healthy community emerges when individuals learn to sit comfortably within this dynamic tension.
The process of belonging healthily to a community is called “differentiation.” This doesn’t mean leaving a group or becoming alienated; it means maintaining one’s distinctiveness while remaining in communion. When individuals achieve this, communities become stronger and healthier. Burgis worries that modern society is losing this ability, fleeing from the very tension that fosters growth and maturity. He points to rites of passage – traditionally involving separation, a liminal phase of identity flux, and then reintegration at a new, more mature level – as crucial processes for differentiation that we are increasingly abandoning.
Joe Forgas, a leading researcher on tribes, identifies key characteristics: in-group loyalty, a shared narrative, and an expectation of conformity. While these can foster cohesion, they can also be taken to unhealthy extremes, leading to what we typically understand as “tribalism.” The critical distinction, Burgis notes, is whether a tribe helps its members mature and grow, or if it demands they dissolve themselves, losing their individual will to something “bigger than them.”
Alarmingly, humans form tribal associations with startling ease. Henri Tajfel’s famous 1970s study demonstrated this with a “minimal group paradigm.” Students were arbitrarily divided into “overestimators” and “underestimators” based on a meaningless task. Even with this nonsensical labeling, they immediately began favoring and rewarding their own group, sometimes even at the expense of their own self-interest, simply to increase the distance from the “other side.” This suggests an ingrained human tendency to tribalize.
Today, algorithms do this for us. We are grouped, labeled, and filtered into communities without much say, often accepting these labels without experiencing any tension. “Maybe the problem today with tribes is that we don’t have a problem finding tribes anymore,” Burgis suggests. “It’s too easy to find tribes and we’re too comfortable in them.” This comfort, however, can be a trap. Without healthy tension – without asking “What do I believe? What do I think?” instead of only “we” statements – we risk unwittingly surrendering our will.
The Family: Our First Training Ground for Differentiation
Murray Bowen’s family systems theory highlights the “undifferentiated ego mass” where family members fuse emotionally, making the family our primary environment for learning to distinguish our individual self from others.
To understand the roots of our struggle with differentiation, Burgis turns to the insights of Murray Bowen, a family psychiatrist active in the 1950s and 60s. Bowen revolutionized therapy by applying systems theory to the family unit. Before Bowen, individuals were treated in isolation; he argued that one could not understand an individual without understanding their entire family emotional system, extending back generations.
Bowen coined the term “undifferentiated ego mass” to describe how families often fuse emotionally, blurring the lines between individual emotions and ideas. In this system, individuals can lose sight of themselves as distinct entities. Differentiation, in Bowen’s view, begins in the family, where we learn to distinguish “myself” from “everybody else.” We acquire a basic level of self-differentiation – understanding where our emotions end and another’s begin – which we then carry into the workplace, political sphere, and broader world. Bowen famously stated that “the world’s anxieties and conflict really are just the sum total of the unresolved differentiation in people’s families.” Anxiety, like electricity, spreads contagiously through undifferentiated family systems, often finding the person most able to absorb it.
Our earliest experiences shape our capacity for differentiation. We are born completely undifferentiated from our mothers. As we grow, families either reward or punish differences, subtly molding our sense of self based on how we navigate conflict and relationships. This “invisible web” of family dynamics often goes unnamed, leading to individual blame rather than systemic understanding. Because we are so immersed in our families, we often lack the objectivity to see these dynamics, making us more emotionally reactive than in other groups. Like a fish unaware of the water it swims in, we are often blind to the profound influence of our family system. Bowen’s work aimed to make these invisible structures visible.
Solid Self vs. Pseudo Self: The Core Distinction
The pseudo self is a negotiable, inauthentic identity that adapts to groups to avoid tension, whereas the solid self is intentionally formed through reflection, allowing one to use “I” statements and stand firm in their convictions.
This brings us to Bowen’s crucial distinction: the pseudo self versus the solid self.
The pseudo self is “negotiable in real time.” It’s the chameleon-like version of ourselves that adopts the ideas, emotions, and energy of a group to find commonality and rapport with the least amount of tension. It’s adaptable, seeking the shortest pathway to establishing relationships, but it’s not truly real. It’s a self constantly being renegotiated, leading to an exhausting and inauthentic existence.
In contrast, the solid self is intentionally formed. It’s the product of reflection, where we’ve consciously considered what we actually believe, think, and feel. A solid self can use the word “I” with conviction, taking responsibility for its own thoughts and moral convictions, rather than constantly reverting to “we” statements. Unhealthy communities often speak only in “we” statements; the “I” is a sign of ownership and deep-seated identity. Can you walk into a room and stand on your own two feet, with a clear sense of who you are, even when confronted with dissenting views, like at Thanksgiving dinner? Or do you nod along, skirt questions, and avoid stating your true beliefs? Bowen warned that consistently yielding to avoid tension prevents the development of a solid self, leading to a highly undifferentiated pseudo self that fuses with strong personalities, political parties, and crowds.
The process of differentiation, then, is about separating our emotions, thoughts, feelings, and beliefs from those closest to us or the crowd we’re in, preventing fusion and self-loss. This is incredibly difficult. The easy, but unhealthy, way to differentiate is “emotional cutoff” – simply cutting people out of our lives. But true differentiation, as Bowen understood it, means being in relationship as a differentiated self, maintaining distinctiveness while remaining connected.
Practically, how does one cultivate a solid self? Bowen’s “belief paper” exercise asked students to reflect deeply on their core beliefs, tracing their origins beyond spontaneous generation to the social processes that shaped them – teachers, parents, friends, history. The challenge is to discern how much a belief is truly our own, and how much is influenced by a desire for approval.
Gossip, Burgis suggests, offers a common opportunity for differentiation. The undifferentiated path is to join the consensus, resolving tension quickly. The path to a solid self is to resist, perhaps by not participating or by offering a different perspective, and then owning the inevitable awkwardness. Sitting with that tension, rather than fleeing it, is how a confident, solid self develops.
August Landmesser: A Monument to the Solid Self
August Landmesser’s defiant refusal to give the Nazi salute, captured in a photograph, exemplifies the solid self’s capacity to act with deep conviction and intentionality, even when surrounded by conformity and facing severe consequences.
The power of differentiation is starkly illustrated by the story of August Landmesser. He joined the Nazi party in the early 1930s for job opportunities, believing he could maintain a distance from its ideology. But after falling in love with a Jewish woman, he faced severe consequences, eventually being sent to a penal battalion and killed.
Before his death, a photograph captured Landmesser at a 1936 rally in Hamburg. Surrounded by a sea of men giving the Nazi salute, he stands with his arms defiantly crossed, the only one in the entire picture refusing to participate. What makes this act so profound, Burgis notes, is that Landmesser did it without any expectation of recognition. He wasn’t performing for social media; he didn’t even know a photographer was capturing the moment.
His action was born of deep conviction, forged through the trials of his relationship. He had realized the true nature of the party and had begun to differentiate himself from it. In that moment, he embodied the solid self, able to separate himself from the crowd, to say “I will not take this particular action,” even at the cost of his life. This is the essence of a solid self: the capacity to act with intentionality and conviction, even when everyone around you expects conformity.
The Power of Crowds and the Hive Conscience
Crowds can subsume individual will, offering pseudo selves anonymity and diffused responsibility; a “hive conscience” means judgments are often mediated by group opinions, rather than direct contact with reality and intrinsic values.
Gustave Le Bon, in his 1895 book on the power of crowds, recognized that the most important “social technology” of his time was not the train, but the crowd itself. In the age of mass gatherings, he observed how individuals could lose themselves in “collective effervescence,” their personal will subsumed by the will of the crowd. They would do and say things they never would alone, becoming anonymous and faceless, absolved of personal responsibility. René Girard further noted that rituals like stoning were often performed by crowds, not individuals, precisely to diffuse accountability.
This attraction to the crowd, Burgis explains, is particularly strong for pseudo selves, offering a way to give oneself over to the “we” and avoid personal responsibility, even for violent or unjust actions.
Often, we don’t form our own judgments about reality until after we’ve absorbed the opinions of others. Our ideas are mediated by news, social media, and what our chosen groups think. This “hive conscience” means our first step isn’t to judge something as good or bad, but to consider how that judgment will align us with a particular group. This is the inverse of how we should engage with reality. A solid self can strip away these layers of mediation to have immediate contact with reality and make its own judgment.
Burgis distinguishes between things that are important because they are socially mediated (everyone else cares, so I must) and things that have intrinsic value, making a claim on us regardless of external opinion. August Landmesser, in his act of transcendence, responded to the objective goodness of his relationship and his duties to his fiancée, values that transcended the socially mediated demands of the Nazi party.
Even within established groups and communities, the real work of differentiation begins. Comfort and validation can lead to stagnation, preventing continued growth and reflection. “If you are in a group of 100 people and all 100 people only come to decisions or conclusions or judgments as a whole without actually allowing the individuals to do the hard work of arriving at doing the thinking themselves, then you just get an undifferentiated mass of people,” Burgis warns.
The goal, therefore, is not merely to leave or join a tribe, but “communion after differentiation.” The strongest, most secure groups are those that can tolerate and even celebrate differentiated selves within them. This is the crucial characteristic to look for when considering any community.
The Three Temptations of the Screen: Undermining the Solid Self
Technology, particularly smartphones, accelerates social contagion and undermines solid self-formation through thinner rites of passage, disordered desire for knowledge (curiositas), and profound restlessness of mind and soul (acedia).
Today, the cultivation of a solid self is harder than ever. We are bombarded by social contagion, caught up in emotions, ideas, and identities through reflexive imitation rather than intentional choice. Technology, particularly smartphones, acts as a powerful accelerant, thrusting us into a world of constant discourse and expectation, making sustained reflection incredibly difficult.
Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, suggested that the free speech debate is a distraction, and the real issue is “free will.” Burgis agrees, arguing that our wills are being programmed, shaped by algorithms and the crowd, leading to an outward expression that is not truly our own. We must focus on how the will is formed, ensuring that when we speak, we speak as ourselves, not just as members of a crowd.
Robin Dunbar’s number (150) suggests the maximum number of stable, meaningful relationships a human can maintain. Beyond this, our capacity for genuine connection diminishes. Burgis reframes this in terms of the pseudo self: “Maybe we can have relationships with a thousand friends on the internet as a pseudo self. In fact, that’s probably the only way that we can have relationships with more than 150 people as the kind of self that’s constantly negotiating itself in real time, which is exhausting and taxing…”
Dunbar emphasized the importance of micro-communities – small, intimate networks of 7-8 close friends, family, or colleagues – for forming a solid self. Yet, smartphones immediately immerse young people into vast, anonymous worlds, forcing them to operate at the level of the pseudo self just to exist.
Burgis identifies three powerful ways the screen actively undermines the formation of a solid self:
1. Thinner Rites of Passage
Traditional, challenging rites of passage that fostered differentiation and maturity have been replaced by online substitutes that lack friction and depth, failing to truly form character.
Traditional rites of passage were crucial for differentiation, involving hard, risky, often solitary challenges that built character, fostered separation from a group, and led to reintegration with a new level of maturity. Think of pilgrimages, first jobs, or periods of solo travel. These experiences, marked by friction, forged a stronger sense of self. Today, these rites have largely migrated online, becoming “substitutes” that lack friction and depth. They offer an easier, less demanding path that fails to penetrate “to the marrow or into the bone,” and thus, fail to truly form character.
2. Curiositas: The Disordered Desire for Knowledge
Curiositas is a passionate, unqualified desire for knowledge, amplified by the internet’s endless feed, where knowing more becomes the sole goal, often driven by pride rather than beneficial purpose.
Augustine of Hippo’s concept of curiositas is not mere curiosity, but a “passionate, disordered desire to know whether the knowing of the thing is actually beneficial for our good or for society at all.” It’s a lust for unqualified knowledge, where knowing more is the sole goal, driven by pride or a desire to appear smart. The internet, with its endless feed, perfectly amplifies this.
Burgis uses the analogy of “rubbernecking” at a car accident: knowledge for the sake of satisfying a disordered curiosity, offering no benefit and potentially causing harm. On the internet, we are surrounded by a “thousand car wrecks” every hour, constantly craning our necks to see more, dissipating our attention from truly meaningful knowledge. Augustine contrasted curiositas with studiositas, which is knowledge directed towards a specific, beneficial end – like a PhD student researching an Alzheimer’s cure. The internet, however, prioritizes quantity over quality, fostering a possessive desire for knowledge that lacks a deeper purpose or common good.
3. Acedia: The Restlessness of Mind and Soul
Acedia, a spiritual restlessness, is amplified by modern technology, manifesting as a constant desire for escape and an inability to rest, which prevents groundedness and fuels curiositas and thin rites of passage.
The desert monks of the 4th and 5th centuries identified acedia, often mistranslated as “sloth,” as a profound spiritual disease. It’s not laziness, but an “extreme form of restlessness of mind and soul.” Monks would pace, wanting to be anywhere but where they were, wondering about alternate lives, unable to adhere to the present reality or their responsibilities. It’s an inability to rest, a constant seeking of escape.
Modern technology amplifies acedia. The late-night scrolling, the constant desire for “something more somewhere else,” the feeling that “nothing they do is ever enough” – these are all symptoms of this spiritual restlessness. While we often view this through the lens of dopamine hits and addiction, Burgis argues it’s fundamentally a spiritual affliction that prevents true leisure and groundedness. This widespread acedia fuels curiositas, which in turn leads to “thin” rites of passage, creating a vicious cycle that prevents us from maturing into differentiated, solid selves.
Marshall McLuhan, the media theorist, famously said that technology is an extension of the human person, amplifying our senses. But what happens when that extension, like the smartphone, amplifies our restlessness, our disordered desires, and our susceptibility to social contagion to the point where we lose ourselves entirely?
The challenge for each of us, then, is to consciously resist these powerful forces. To step back from the incessant noise, to reflect deeply on our beliefs and feelings, to practice differentiation within our closest relationships, and to intentionally cultivate a solid self that can stand firm, make independent judgments, and contribute authentically to the world, rather than simply dissolving into the crowd. The journey to reclaiming our true selves begins with this courageous act of inner work.

America Under the Lens: AI Surveillance, Political Firestorms, and a Nation’s Unsettled Landscape
Episode summary
The New York Times podcast “The Headlines” details the extensive deployment of AI-powered surveillance cameras along the U.S.-Mexico border, revealing that over a million people in both countries live within their panoramic, motion-detecting, infrared gaze. These towers, often mistaken for cell towers, can track individuals across multiple fields of view, yet U.S. officials offer no data on their effectiveness in catching migrants or smugglers, despite plans for 1,500 more towers nationwide.
The episode also covers a DOJ criminal investigation into Trump ally Cory Lewandowski for alleged self-enrichment while at DHS, a controversial Ohio gubernatorial attack ad leveraging the Democratic candidate’s childhood trauma, widespread protests in Indonesia over health-damaging rainforest fires, and Airbnb’s new policy restricting hosts from assigning extensive guest chores. Finally, a news quiz covers Starlink ground station vandalism, new national parks, and Copenhagen’s unexpected obsession with simple cheese sandwiches.
The past week has cast a stark light on the evolving landscape of American life, from the silent, all-seeing gaze of advanced surveillance technology along its borders to the raw, personal battles raging in its political arenas. As new allegations surface against powerful figures and environmental crises deepen across the globe, the threads of technology, ethics, and human experience weave together into a complex tapestry of current events.
The Unblinking Eye: AI-Powered Surveillance Along the Border
Federal authorities have installed hundreds of AI-powered cameras along the U.S.-Mexico border, forming an unprecedented surveillance network with panoramic views and advanced tracking capabilities.
Along the vast expanse of the U.S.-Mexico border, from the sun-drenched beaches of California to the dusty plains of Texas, a new kind of sentinel has taken root. Federal authorities have quietly installed hundreds of AI-powered cameras, forming an unprecedented network of government surveillance designed to “secure the border.”
These imposing towers stand tall, offering panoramic views that encompass schools, homes, parks, and even beaches. Their capabilities are startling: they can capture detailed images from distances of up to two miles, boast motion-detecting radar, and are equipped with infrared technology. Most significantly, they employ sophisticated AI software to track vehicles and people with chilling precision.
A Network of Control
A New York Times team analyzed the surveillance towers’ locations, finding that over a million people live within their sightline, and the interconnected cameras can continuously track individuals across different fields of view.
Bora Erden, a reporter from The New York Times, was part of a team that meticulously analyzed the locations of these surveillance towers. Using advanced mapping software, they uncovered the true scope of what these cameras can see. The findings are sobering: more than a million people in both Mexico and the United States live within the expansive sightline of this burgeoning surveillance system.
“One of the most powerful aspects of these cameras is that they’re part of a larger network,” Erden explained. “There’s a bunch of them in a row. And so the point of the technology is I can pick up someone in one camera and then track them across different camera fields of view.” This interconnectivity allows for continuous monitoring, creating a virtual dragnet over vast areas.
Life Under Surveillance
Public reactions to the towers varied, with some residents opposing the surveillance, others feeling ambivalent, and most being unaware of the towers’ true purpose as Department of Homeland Security installations.
The Times team ventured to the border regions to gauge public sentiment about these towering eyes. Reactions were varied and often nuanced. Some residents expressed outright opposition, feeling deeply uneasy about Border Patrol surveilling their homes and lives. They articulated a strong desire for privacy and a government that respects their boundaries.
Others, however, displayed a sense of ambivalence, viewing the towers as an inevitable reality of living on the U.S.-Mexico border. For them, the presence of extensive border infrastructure and frequent Border Patrol agents is a given, and these new towers are merely another fixture in an already militarized landscape.
Perhaps the most striking finding was the widespread unawareness. The vast majority of people living within the cameras’ view simply don’t know what the towers are. Many mistake them for cell towers or other communication infrastructure, oblivious to their true purpose as Department of Homeland Security installations.
The Future of Border Security
U.S. officials provided no data on the towers’ effectiveness, but the Trump administration plans to install 1,500 more AI towers along both the southern and Canadian borders, as well as coastal areas.
When pressed for information, U.S. officials remained tight-lipped, offering no data on how effective the towers have been at apprehending migrants or drug smugglers. Customs and Border Protection, in a brief statement, simply declared the new towers “essential to border security.”
Looking ahead, the Trump administration has ambitious plans to expand this network dramatically. Funding has been secured to install an additional 1,500 AI towers, not just along the southern border, but also near the Canadian border, in Puerto Rico, and in various coastal areas across the U.S. This signals a significant and far-reaching shift in the nation’s approach to domestic surveillance and border control, raising profound questions about privacy, civil liberties, and the future of life in border communities.
Washington’s Shifting Sands: Allegations and Political Battles
Beyond border surveillance, Washington D.C. faced political drama, including a criminal investigation into a Trump ally and a deeply personal attack ad in Ohio’s gubernatorial race.
Beyond the technological frontier of the border, the nation’s capital and its political battlegrounds were embroiled in their own brand of drama, marked by criminal investigations and deeply personal attacks.
A Trump Ally Under Scrutiny
The Department of Justice is investigating Cory Luwendowski, a Trump ally, for allegedly profiting from his role at DHS, an inquiry that follows previous allegations of misconduct.
In a rare move during the Trump administration’s second term, the Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into Cory Luwendowski, a staunch Trump ally and former top aide to the Secretary of Homeland Security. According to two sources with knowledge of the situation, Luwendowski is accused of personally profiting from his role, though the specific actions under investigation remain unclear.
Luwendowski joined DHS last year in what was initially presented as a part-time, unpaid advisory position to Christy Noom, who led the department at the time. However, he quickly began to wield influence far beyond the scope of this limited role, reportedly holding meetings in Noom’s office without her presence and becoming involved in the approval of government contracts. Concerns about his conduct and potential self-enrichment were reportedly raised by several Homeland Security officials in internal discussions.
This is not the first time Luwendowski’s actions have drawn scrutiny. Over the years, he has faced multiple allegations, including attempting to bring a handgun into a congressional office building, an incident involving a female reporter, and making unwanted sexual advances toward the wife of a Trump donor. In the latter case, he faced misdemeanor charges and ultimately reached a plea deal that included eight hours of impulse control counseling. A lawyer for Luwendowski has denied any improper or illegal conduct by his client in response to the new DOJ inquiry.
Ohio’s Bitter Campaign Trail
Ohio’s gubernatorial race became one of the nation’s ugliest due to a controversial ad from Vive Ramaswami’s campaign, featuring Amy Acton’s estranged mother accusing her of lying, which drew widespread condemnation but was supported by Trump.
Meanwhile, in Ohio, the state’s gubernatorial race has devolved into one of the nation’s ugliest political contests, ignited by a controversial and deeply personal attack ad that has fractured the Republican party.
The ad targets Amy Acton, the Democratic candidate, and features her own mother accusing her daughter of lying and exaggerating about her childhood struggles. The mother and daughter have been estranged since Acton was 12 years old in the 1970s, a rift that began after the mother supported her husband following his arrest on charges that he raped Acton, leading to the mother losing custody.
Acton has expressed profound outrage at the ad, which was released by the campaign of her Republican opponent, Vive Ramaswami. The ad has drawn condemnation from across the political spectrum, including Ohio’s sitting Republican governor, who called it “deeply, deeply troubling.”
However, not everyone in the Republican party shares this sentiment. Some have hailed the ad as a “bombshell.” Vice President J.D. Vance dismissed criticism as “whining,” and notably, President Trump himself urged Ramaswami to continue airing the ad, stating, “It’s a big thing. It’s like a big story about he must take that ad down immediately. He must No, the mother is calling the daughter a terrible person and a liar.”
While both campaigns in Ohio have leaned into sharply worded attacks—with some ads calling Ramaswami a “con man” and “swindler”—many observers believe the ad featuring Acton’s mother crossed an unforgivable line. A conservative radio host who advised Ramaswami’s 2024 presidential campaign told The Times that the campaign is “walking a very fine line” and taking “a huge bet” with the ad. Despite the controversy, Ramaswami’s campaign has doubled down, announcing plans to spend an additional $4 million airing the ad across the state.
Beyond the Headlines: Environmental Crisis and Consumer Shifts
Global challenges, including Indonesia’s environmental crisis, and shifts in consumer experiences, like Airbnb’s new chore policy, also captured attention this week.
Amidst the domestic dramas, global challenges and shifts in everyday consumer experiences also captured attention this week.
Indonesia’s Smoldering Forests
Protesters in Indonesia are demanding urgent government action against raging rainforest fires, fueled by drought and El Niño, which have caused widespread haze, school closures, and acute respiratory illnesses.
Across Indonesia, protesters have taken to the streets, demanding urgent government action to quell the raging rainforest fires that have engulfed the country for months. Fuelled by a severe drought and the El Niño phenomenon, these record-breaking infernos have burned out of control, blanketing vast regions in a stifling haze.
The smoke has become so thick that traffic has been forced to a crawl, numerous schools have been closed, and a growing health crisis is unfolding. The Indonesian Health Ministry reports that hundreds of thousands of people, many of them children, have suffered acute respiratory illnesses. One radiologist working near the fire zones noted that approximately a third of the 60 chest X-rays he examines daily show signs of respiratory issues.
Protesters are demanding that the country’s president declare a national emergency and take decisive steps to prevent the “slash and burn” agricultural practices widely blamed for setting the stage for these devastating fires. While the president has ordered additional firefighting resources, he has also defended the government’s response, stating that “ultimately the only real solution is rain.”
Airbnb Reins in Chore Lists
After numerous complaints, Airbnb will limit hosts’ ability to require guests to perform extensive chores, eliminating tasks like taking out trash or doing dishes, a change met with some host backlash.
For years, guests booking stays on Airbnb have often found their vacation accompanied by an unexpected “to-do list” from their hosts. From washing sheets and towels to taking out the trash or doing dishes, many travelers have found themselves performing chores despite paying hefty cleaning fees. This discrepancy has been a source of widespread frustration and a common “headscratcher” for users.
Now, after countless complaints, Airbnb is taking action. Starting next month, the company plans to rein in what hosts are reasonably allowed to ask of guests. The new policy essentially eliminates long chore lists, stipulating that hosts cannot require guests to do anything that would “require significant time or effort or would typically be performed by a cleaner.” This means no more taking out the trash or having to do the dishes.
The policy shift has not been met with universal approval. Some hosts are pushing back, arguing the new rules are unreasonable and have even launched an online petition with thousands of signatures urging the company to reverse its decision.
This change comes at a pivotal time for Airbnb, which is nearing its 20th anniversary and actively adjusting its business model. The company, which originally pitched itself as an alternative to traditional hotels, is now expanding its offerings to become a “one-stop shop for travel,” adding services like grocery delivery, car rentals, and even hotel listings. The Airbnb CEO acknowledged in a recent earnings call and an interview with The Times that the company recognizes “chores have become, yeah, a lot.” He emphasized that hosts need to remember that “these people are on vacation and they’re on vacation from their chores.”
From the pervasive reach of AI surveillance to the bitter depths of political campaigning, and from global environmental crises to the evolving expectations of travel, the past week has offered a snapshot of a world grappling with the complexities of technological advancement, ethical boundaries, and the fundamental human desire for both security and respite.

(Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life)』과 『99: 소셜 전염 시대에 정체성을 만드는 법(The 99: Forging Identity in the Age of Social Contagion)』의 저자이자 클루니 연구소(Clooney Institute) 소장인 루크 버지스(Luke Burgis)는 빅 씽크(Big Think)와의 인터뷰에서 이 질문에 대한 깊이 있는 통찰을 제시했습니다.
(Differentiation of Self)
(Solid Self)
(Communion after Differentiation)

J.D. 밴스(J.D.
