The Absurdity Report: What Happens When News Gets Really, Really Weird

Episode summary

This episode of “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” is a humorous news quiz featuring panelists Tig Notaro, Peter Gross, and Joyelle Nicole Johnson. The show opens with a tribute to Dolly Parton’s generosity and then dives into current events, including a listener contestant answering questions about a “trade war” between the US and Canada (sparked by tariffs and leading to jokes about maple syrup smuggling and renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America”), and Amazon expanding its drone delivery service, resulting in comical package mishaps like dropping items into swimming pools.

The “Bluff the Listener” segment presents three fabricated stories about figures in power and their unusual relationships, with the real story being Japan’s Prime Minister having a brief, lonely connection with a cockroach in her official residence. The show concludes with an interview with Carissa Hendricks, also known as magician Lucy Darling, who holds a world record for holding a lit torch in her mouth for 2 minutes and 1 second, enduring significant pain for “the glory.”

In a world often dominated by serious headlines, there’s a unique pleasure in finding the humor and sheer absurdity lurking within the week’s news. Such was the case recently at NPR’s beloved news quiz, “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me,” where host Peter Sagal, joined by a panel of quick-witted comedians—Tig Notaro, Peter Grosz, and Joel Nicole Johnson—and guest scorekeeper Alzo Slade, dissected everything from international trade disputes to the nutritional value of lettuce. What emerged was a tapestry of bizarre truths and hilarious observations, proving that sometimes, the news is stranger (and funnier) than fiction.

The show kicked off with a heartfelt, albeit humorous, tribute to the legendary Dolly Parton, whose incredible generosity had been widely celebrated that week. Sagal quipped, “When you put on your winter coat for the first time in a month or so and find $20 in the pocket, turns out she put that there.” It was a lighthearted nod to a cultural icon, setting the stage for an episode that would blend genuine insight with relentless wit.

From Tariffs to Toilet Paper: The Perils of a Trade War

A segment on Canadian tariffs revealed Trump’s shifting reasons and the potential for shortages in cars, dishwashers, and toilet paper, leading to absurd suggestions like bootlegging maple syrup and renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America.”

The first segment, “Who’s Alzo?”, challenged listener contestant Francis from Troutdale, Oregon, to identify newsmakers behind cryptic quotes. Francis, who charmingly described her job as taking “a bunch of old men on bad dates” to get them out of the house, was first confronted with a defiant quote from Canadian politician Doug Ford: “He can kiss my ass.” The target of Ford’s ire? None other than former President Donald Trump, who had initiated a new round of tariffs against Canadian exports.

The panel dove headfirst into the implications of this rekindled trade war. Trump’s stated reasons for the tariffs seemed to shift daily, from “discriminatory trade practices” to “unfair labor laws,” and even, comically, “stopping Canada from getting a nuclear weapon.” The real-world consequences, however, were less amusing. As Joel Nicole Johnson pointed out, Americans were about to discover “how much stuff is made in Canada when the price skyrockets,” listing cars, dishwashers, and, crucially, toilet paper. The thought of a toilet paper shortage, especially for those who might resort to dishwashers as a “backup plan,” drew laughs and groans.

The humor escalated with the panel’s suggestions for dealing with the tariffs. The idea of bootlegging maple syrup made a comeback, with Peter Grosz confessing, “I’m just in it for the smuggling.” Alzo Slade then introduced a fictional executive order from Trump to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.” The panel mused on the name’s implications, with one suggesting it sounded like “a great place to get on your pontoon boat, drink about 50 beers,” while another deadpanned, “It also sounds like a place you go to die.” The Canadian retaliation was equally absurd: renaming the common goose, notorious for its messy habits in parks, an “America goose.”

Drone Deliveries and Dietary Dilemmas

Amazon’s drone deliveries led to comedic mishaps and job displacement concerns, while a Washington Post article sparked debate by claiming lettuce has no nutritional value and suggesting lentils as a substitute.

Next, Francis tackled the news of Amazon expanding its drone aerial delivery service to 500 American cities. The quote, “Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh no,” was from a customer watching her package dropped into a swimming pool. The panel highlighted America’s new favorite pastime: watching videos of these drones “completely screwing it up.” Beyond the comedic mishaps, the discussion touched on the potential job displacement for human delivery drivers, with a humorous suggestion that they might end up “follow[ing] the drones around and pick[ing] up the packages from the stream, the pool, and the gutter.” The idea of “jailbreaking” drones and selling them at barber shops as “Dam Amazon” products further illustrated the chaotic potential.

The final quote for Francis concerned a commenter in The Washington Post suggesting that a common food might not be good for us. The answer: lettuce. The article argued that lettuce is “wasteful and actually has no nutritional value,” often serving merely as “a delivery method for dressing.” The panel, naturally, took issue with this, pointing out the existence of bacon in salads and the fact that many healthy foods, like celery and cucumbers, are “mostly water.” The nutritionist’s solution—swapping lettuce for lentils—was met with incredulity. “Nobody wants a BLT where the L is a lentil,” Peter Grosz declared, perfectly encapsulating the absurdity of the recommendation.

The Screaming Coaster and a Seagull Nemesis

A new “nearly silent” roller coaster at Universal Studios was unexpectedly loud due to passenger screams, and a police superintendent developed an obsession with a herring-sandwich-stealing seagull.

The panel then faced their own set of questions. Joel Nicole Johnson was asked about a new, “nearly silent” roller coaster at Universal Studios. The engineers had successfully eliminated the clatter of wheels and the whine of the motor, but they overlooked one crucial element: “people screaming.” Neighbors now reported the air filled with “people screaming in terror with no context,” leading to comical suggestions for mitigation, like “gag the passengers” or equipping each car with “a stern librarian” to shush riders.

The Unlikely Confidantes of Power

In the “Bluff the Listener” game, the true story was that Japan’s sleep-deprived Prime Minister, Son Takichi, found companionship in a cockroach in her official residence, only for her staff to remove it.

The “Bluff the Listener” game, with contestant Casey from Pittsburgh, presented three outlandish stories of people in power revealing secret relationships. The challenge was to discern truth from fiction.

Joel Nicole Johnson spun a tale of Cornelius Crowley, a bored police superintendent in Bantry, Ireland, who became obsessed with Carl the Seagull, his herring-sandwich-stealing nemesis. His wife and co-workers believed he secretly loved the bird, with one shop owner comparing their dynamic to “Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive,” concluding, “Guys, y’all should kiss.”

Peter Grosz presented the story of Yan von Omen, headmaster of a Dutch boarding school, who revealed his trusted adviser, Sophie, was actually a chalkboard eraser. Sophie, named after an ex-girlfriend, had once inadvertently corrected a math mistake, leading to a 20-year professional partnership, complete with googly eyes and a tiny blonde wig.

Finally, Tig Notaro recounted the story of Son Takichi, the sleep-deprived Prime Minister of Japan, who admitted to finding companionship in a cockroach living in her official residence. After screaming at first, she developed a bond, only for her staff to remove the pest. She later expressed feeling “relieved but also a little lonely or maybe sad,” with Tig recommending, “maybe getting a dog and a life.”

In a stunning turn, Casey correctly identified Tig’s story about the Japanese Prime Minister and her fleeting friendship with a cockroach as the true one. An exterminator, Tony Hernandez, confirmed the unsanitary nature of such a bond, but the human element of loneliness in power resonated.

A Magician’s Flaming Feats and Spicy Snacks

Magician Carissa Hendricks, known as Lucy Darling, holds a world record for holding a lit torch in her mouth and correctly answered questions about spicy snacks, including a Harambe Cheeto selling for almost $100,000.

The “Not My Job” segment featured an interview with Carissa Hendricks, the award-winning magician known for her alter ego, Lucy Darling. Hendricks, a true circus artist, holds the world record for holding a lit torch in her mouth for an astonishing 2 minutes and 1 second. She candidly described the intense pain, the heated teeth, and the “unreasonable rage” she harbored for six months against the official who she thought hadn’t counted her time, only to discover later he had, but her brain had “blocked out all the noise.”

Hendricks also shared other extraordinary skills, like hula hooping a fire hoop while clenching fire torches in her toes—an act she admitted “people didn’t get.” She then delved into the creation of Lucy Darling, a character inspired by old Hollywood “bone vivon style women” like Zsa Zsa Gabor. Lucy, described as a “1940s Loki-style character” who is “a little evil,” embodies a form of drag that’s “deliberately a little bit ambiguous,” designed to “trick people into… not knowing that they like drag yet.” Hendricks humorously referred to herself as “the Neil Degrasse Tyson of drag.”

The game for Carissa, “Try Eating This Fire,” appropriately focused on spicy snacks. She correctly identified that a Flamin’ Hot Cheeto shaped like Harambe the gorilla sold for almost $100,000 (surpassing the Charizard Cheeto), and that Doritos once offered “Doritos Roulette,” where one in six chips was painfully spicy. She also knew the surprising origin of the Cheeto itself: a farmer cleaning out a clogged animal feed grinder in the 1930s.

AI Fails and Dating App Revelations

An AI-generated map with incorrect state names highlighted AI’s limitations, and a new app for background checks on dates was revealed, a task women have been doing for years.

The panel’s final round of questions brought more contemporary absurdities to light. Tig Notaro discussed a Kentucky middle school that distributed an AI-generated map of the United States, riddled with incorrect state names like “Vani” for Kentucky and “Lukong” for Louisiana, alongside an AI-generated periodic table full of “botched elements.” It was a stark reminder of AI’s current limitations.

Peter Grosz then revealed a new app designed to perform background checks on dates before a first meeting. While marketed as a stress-reliever, the panel quickly pointed out that “female friends have literally been doing [this] for years.” Grosz shared a personal anecdote about his prom date’s father demanding his driver’s license for a background check, highlighting how some parents have always found ways to vet potential suitors.

The show concluded with the “Limerick Challenge” and “Lightning Fill-in-the-Blank,” covering topics from new toilet paper made from rice straw (“ouchy!”) and the shocking truth about germ-ridden hotel carpets (“never walk on them barefoot!”) to the debate on golf as exercise (less beneficial with a cart than mini-golf). A particularly dark and hilarious story emerged in the lightning round: an Australian grocery store ticketed a woman’s car for being parked overnight after she had a heart attack in their parking lot, then “generously” reduced the $80 ticket to $30 when she explained the circumstances.

In an era of constant news cycles, “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me” consistently finds the unexpected, the peculiar, and the outright hilarious. From international trade skirmishes to the secret lives of prime ministers and the untold stories of celebrity magicians, the show reminds us that even the most serious topics can offer a moment of levity, and that sometimes, the news is at its best when it’s just a little bit weird.

Gen Z’s Political Reckoning: Why the Youngest Voters Are Rewriting the Rules

Episode summary

Gen Z is fiercely independent and distrustful of traditional political parties, a trend exacerbated by their economic anxiety and a significant gender divide. Murmuration’s data reveals nearly 30% of young Americans choose “none of the above” for political labels, and only 28% can cover a $500 unexpected expense. This independence stems from growing up in the Trump era, experiencing the pandemic’s impact, and observing the perceived ineffectiveness of past activism.

The practical takeaway for politicians is that Gen Z demands transparency, bold ideas, and tangible solutions to local issues like potholes and affordability, rather than abstract political rhetoric. They are not necessarily socialist, but gravitate towards candidates offering creative disruption, as evidenced by their embrace of DSA candidates. This generation, shaped by social media and economic precarity, seeks leaders who acknowledge their struggles and present concrete plans for a better future, especially concerning AI’s impact on work.

Like any good millennial, the author of this article has a complicated relationship with Gen Z. We admire their fresh perspectives on work and culture, their embrace of wired headphones, and their generally healthier lifestyles. Yet, we’re often bewildered by their contradictory tastes—millennial styles and music, but a disdain for millennials themselves—and their seemingly arbitrary dislikes, from movie sex scenes to the laughing emoji.

However, regardless of personal quirks, one undeniable truth emerges: Gen Z is fundamentally transforming the national political landscape. Their fierce independence and unwillingness to be confined by traditional Democratic or Republican labels set them apart from previous generations. This shift isn’t just anecdotal; it’s a profound realignment visible in data and deep-dive research.

In a recent episode of Vox’s “America, Actually,” Gen Z researcher Rachel Janfaza joined host Estela to dissect the nuanced reality of this diverse generation. Partnering with Murmuration, a national firm specializing in young voter surveys, the segment aimed to separate fact from fiction and understand the “why” behind Gen Z’s distinctive political behavior. What they uncovered paints a picture of a generation shaped by anxiety, distrust, and a hunger for authentic, disruptive change.

The Fiercely Independent Mindset

Gen Z exhibits overwhelming political independence, with nearly 30% rejecting common labels, driven by a profound distrust of authority and institutions shaped by their distinct coming-of-age experiences during the Trump and Biden eras.

The most striking finding from Murmuration’s data is Gen Z’s overwhelming political independence. When presented with a list of common political labels—Democratic Socialist, liberal, moderate, America First—almost 30% of young Americans under 30 chose “none of the above.” This isn’t just apathy; it’s a deliberate rejection of existing political boxes.

Rachel Janfaza, who founded the research firm The Up and Up, dedicated to Gen Z voters, confirms this independence in her focus groups. She attributes much of this to a profound distrust of authority and institutions, a sentiment deeply ingrained by their unique coming-of-age experiences. Janfaza even posits a “theory of the two Gen Zs” to explain this divergence:

  • Gen Z 1.0 (roughly 22-29 years old): Came of age during Trump’s first term. Witnessed a new era of politics and responded with large-scale youth-led activism (March for Our Lives, climate strikes, Black Lives Matter). There was a belief that protest could lead to change.
  • Gen Z 2.0 (younger than 22): Primarily came of age during the Biden era, post-COVID. Experienced mask mandates, vaccine mandates, and school reopenings largely overseen by Democrats, especially in blue areas. This led to a strong resistance to authority, as they felt like “guinea pigs in an experiment they didn’t sign up for.” Their disillusionment wasn’t necessarily a shift to the Republican party, but a broad move away from both traditional parties, a deeper distrust of institutions, and a strong aversion to labels of any kind—political, gender, or relational.

For Gen Z 2.0, the activism of their older counterparts often felt futile. “Where did it get us?” they ask, observing that many of the same problems persist. This has fueled a shift from grand, national movements to a focus on local issues and community-level impact. Rather than believing that rallying together can make a difference on a national scale, many now prioritize making changes in their own communities and lives.

Anxious Futures: Economic Realities and Institutional Distrust

Gen Z’s independence stems from anxieties like economic precarity, with only 28% able to cover a $500 expense, and a deep distrust of institutions, as 91% don’t believe government explanations are accurate, preferring cross-checked, first-hand accounts over traditional media.

Gen Z’s political independence is deeply intertwined with their anxieties, particularly economic ones. Murmuration’s data reveals a stark reality: only 28% of 18-30 year olds say they can cover an unexpected $500 expense using cash or savings. This financial precarity fuels their distrust and shapes their political demands.

When asked who they blame for their economic plight, young adults point to clear villains: inflation (48%), corporate greed (34%), and government economic policies (32%). Janfaza’s focus groups echo this, highlighting a pervasive feeling that “everything is too hard to afford.”

Adding to this economic anxiety is the looming shadow of Artificial Intelligence. Janfaza notes that AI is a central concern for young people, right alongside inflation, as it directly impacts their sense of purpose and future work prospects. The constant noise about needing to be “AI-fluent” or risk irrelevance creates immense pressure and uncertainty for a generation on the cusp of adulthood.

This economic insecurity is compounded by a profound distrust of traditional institutions. Murmuration found that a shocking 91% of young adults do not believe the government’s official explanations for major events are usually accurate. Forty percent believe important facts are “often or deliberately hidden,” and 26% feel government explanations are “usually incomplete.”

Janfaza attributes this mass distrust to several factors:

  • COVID-19: The chaotic and often contradictory handling of the pandemic.
  • The Trump Era: Growing up entirely within a political landscape dominated by Trump, whether one saw him as a cause or a solution to governmental breakdown, fostered widespread skepticism.
  • Social Media: The ability to “see through things” and the perceived lack of transparency from official sources.

When it comes to news consumption, this distrust extends to mainstream media. Only 8% of 18-30 year olds trust traditional news outlets to discover what actually happened. Instead, Gen Z prioritizes cross-checking information across multiple sources, with a strong emphasis on first-hand accounts from individuals experiencing events on the ground. They also desire transparency from journalists about their personal biases, reflecting a generation taught that everyone’s “story is valid.” This explains the rise of personality-driven content on social media, where creators offer direct, often unfiltered, perspectives.

Beyond Woke: Shifting Social Movements and Identity

Gen Z is moving away from identity politics and large-scale online activism, instead focusing on local issues and tangible community improvements, driven by a pragmatic desire for concrete results and a growing rejection of algorithmic influence in favor of in-person connections.

The past decade saw a surge in social activism—Me Too, Black Lives Matter, March for Our Lives. While these movements were powerful, there’s a perception that progressive politicians are now “backing off” from the “woke one” era. Does this mean Gen Z cares less about these issues? Not according to Janfaza.

Instead, she argues it’s a movement away from identity politics. As the most diverse generation in American history, diversity is simply “normal” for Gen Z. They don’t want to be told what their politics should be based on their skin color, sexual orientation, or gender. They’ve also grown weary of the online vitriol and constant attacks that often accompany sustained digital activism.

This fatigue has led to a shift from large-scale, online movements to a focus on local issues and individual impact. While still progressive on issues like reproductive healthcare, gun violence, and LGBTQ+ rights, they’re pragmatic. “Where did it get us?” they ask, seeing many problems persist despite their activism. This drives them to seek tangible improvements in their immediate communities—from fixing potholes to advocating for social programming like SNAP benefits and affordable housing. They want leaders who can communicate transparently and deliver concrete results that improve their constituents’ daily lives.

This emphasis on individual circumstances also ties into economic realities. Many young people feel they need to prioritize their own financial stability—affording food, housing, and supporting family—before they can fully engage with broader societal rights. This isn’t necessarily pure individualism, but a realistic response to high costs of living and the need to “build their own brands” in a competitive world.

Interestingly, despite their heavy social media use, there’s also a growing “rejection and rebuke of the algorithm.” Janfaza highlights a trend of “IRL summer,” where young people are actively seeking in-person community and experiences, from local block parties to sports celebrations. They’re tired of having their “taste decided for them” by algorithms and are pushing back against the traditional influencer model in favor of local creators and genuine, in-person connections.

The Evolving Gender Divide: Towards Common Ground

While a significant gender divide exists, with young women shifting left due to social issues and young men shifting right, Gen Z is actively seeking unity around common concerns like AI and the economy, providing a “permission structure” to move past the “gender war.”

The 2024 election cycle brought the Gen Z gender divide into sharp focus, with a significant 17-point gap between young men and women supporting the Democratic candidate. Murmuration data showed young men were twice as likely to view Donald Trump favorably.

Janfaza unpacks the drivers of this gap:

  • Young Women’s Leftward Shift: Since 2017, young women have moved remarkably to the left, driven by “social wedge issues” like immigration during Trump’s first term, the Me Too movement, and crucially, the fall of Roe v. Wade. Issues of bodily autonomy and individual rights created a powerful “sisterhood” and camaraderie, both online and in person.
  • Young Men’s Rightward Shift (and Democratic Failure): While young men did shift right, Janfaza notes that for many, issues like abortion didn’t personally affect them. The conversation around “incelization” or figures like Joe Rogan and Andrew Tate captures some of the narrative, but Janfaza also points to a failure by Democrats to actively reach out to young men as allies and create shared political spaces for them. It’s not that male bonding doesn’t exist, but that some of it, as Estela observes, can be formed in values at odds with Democratic platforms, like a backlash to the Me Too movement.

However, the good news is that Gen Z is actively seeking to move past this “gender war.” While they acknowledge the divide, they express a desire to “get out of it.” Janfaza’s recent research shows a growing unity around a new set of issues that are less gendered and affect everyone: AI and the economy. This emerging consensus provides a “permission structure” to set aside the gender fight, as everyone’s lives are impacted by these overarching concerns. This shift is also partly a rejection of a “manufactured” gender war, often amplified by external commentators and political candidates.

Hope in Disruption

Gen Z demands disruption, with 67% prioritizing fairness over stability, seeking creative solutions and transparent leaders who offer bold ideas, signaling a hopeful shift towards a less toxic and more responsive political future by rewriting old rules.

Gen Z’s message to politicians is clear: the status quo is unacceptable. A staggering 67% of adults under 30 believe it is more important to make changes to improve representation and fairness than to preserve stability and trust in existing democratic institutions. They are “hungry for creative solutions” and leaders who will “level with them,” acknowledge problems, and offer bold ideas for the future, rather than gaslighting or offering generic platitudes. This is why they embrace candidates offering new, bold ideas, even if those candidates are outside the Democratic establishment.

As Estela concludes, Gen Z’s skepticism and demands for disruption offer a surprising glimmer of hope for a post-Trump future. There is power in rejecting algorithms, defining one’s own taste, and demanding creativity from a political system that has largely failed them. The old rules weren’t working anyway, and Gen Z is poised to rewrite them, potentially ushering in an era of politics that is less toxic, more hopeful, and genuinely responsive to the needs of its people.

New Zealand’s Curious Paradox: A Haven for Billionaires, a Struggle for Locals

Episode summary

New Zealand is intentionally positioning itself as a “safe haven” for the world’s ultra-wealthy, despite its small, isolated, and agriculturally focused nature. This strategy is driven by the country’s “golden visa” program, which, after a 2025 revamp, now offers permanent residency for a $5 million investment in local businesses over three years, requiring only 21 days of physical presence. This has dramatically increased applications, bringing in $2.3 billion in committed capital, primarily from Americans, Chinese, and Hong Kong residents, who also benefit from a four-year exemption on foreign income taxes and no capital gains, inheritance, or wealth taxes.

This influx of wealth, while injecting capital and generating GST revenue, creates significant social and economic consequences. The “tax campsite” approach, however, risks a “race to the bottom” as other nations like Spain and Portugal shut down similar programs due to housing and security concerns, and Australia raises its capital gains tax, putting direct pressure on New Zealand’s strategy. The biggest problem is “stickiness”: once the four-year tax exemption ends, these mobile millionaires may simply move to another tax haven, leaving behind inflated housing markets, like Queenstown where average house prices are $1.9 million, making it unaffordable for local workers.

New Zealand, often celebrated for its pristine landscapes and tranquil isolation, is grappling with a peculiar demographic paradox. For years, a steady stream of everyday New Zealanders, or “Kiwis,” have been leaving their homeland, primarily for the higher incomes and broader opportunities offered by its larger neighbour, Australia. Yet, simultaneously, the nation has become an irresistible magnet for the world’s ultra-wealthy, who are pouring in at an unprecedented rate. This isn’t a mere coincidence; it’s the result of a deliberate, long-term strategy by the New Zealand government to attract global capital.

The question then arises: Why has this small, isolated agricultural country, with a population roughly equivalent to Sydney, become a coveted status symbol for the world’s richest? How is it actively encouraging this influx? And, perhaps most critically, what are the profound consequences of rolling out such an exclusive red carpet?

The Allure of Isolation: Why New Zealand?

New Zealand’s isolation, low crime rates, and stable government make it an appealing “end-of-the-world” retreat for the ultra-wealthy, a reputation solidified by high-profile cases like Peter Thiel’s citizenship.

At first glance, New Zealand seems an unlikely destination for the globe’s elite. It lacks the bustling financial hubs, luxury infrastructure, or cosmopolitan allure typically sought by the wealthy. Hours of flying from any major city, it’s a land of clean air, empty landscapes, low crime rates, and a remarkably stable government. For a very specific kind of person, however, this isolation is precisely the appeal.

For those whose income isn’t tied to a physical location, and who can charter a private jet whenever a trip is necessary, the sheer distance from global problems becomes a significant draw. This appeal gained international prominence in 2018 when Bloomberg reported on Silicon Valley figures quietly buying up “bolt-holes” in New Zealand’s South Island, solidifying its reputation as the ultimate “end-of-the-world” retreat. The country has been more than happy to accommodate this narrative. The infamous case of Peter Thiel, granted New Zealand citizenship in 2011 after spending a mere 12 days in the country, highlighted this willingness, sparking a scandal when it became public six years later. Once a few high-profile billionaires establish roots, the trend becomes self-reinforcing, cementing New Zealand’s image as the destination for the ultra-wealthy.

Rolling Out the Red Carpet: New Zealand’s Golden Visa and Tax Incentives

New Zealand actively attracts the wealthy with its enhanced “Active Investor Plus Visa,” requiring a NZ$5-10 million investment and minimal residency, complemented by a four-year tax exemption on foreign income and no capital gains, inheritance, or wealth taxes.

New Zealand hasn’t waited for the wealthy to discover its charms by chance. It has actively facilitated their entry through a streamlined immigration process, most notably the “Active Investor Plus Visa,” commonly known as a Golden Visa. In April 2025, the government significantly enhanced its accessibility. The previous requirement of a NZ$15 million domestic investment was replaced with two more flexible options:

  • Growth Category: A NZ$5 million investment into local businesses and funds for three years.
  • Balance Category: A NZ$10 million investment into safer assets for five years.

Crucially, the English language requirement was entirely scrapped. Under the growth category, applicants only need to be physically present in New Zealand for a mere 21 days across the entire three-year investment period. This visa grants permanent residency, a straightforward path to citizenship.

The response has been nothing short of dramatic. In over two years under the old settings, the investor visa attracted 116 applications and approximately NZ$70 million. Since the relaunch, Immigration New Zealand has received 837 applications, booking an astounding NZ$2.3 billion in committed capital, with the average application “waved through in 36 working days.” When an immigration department quotes its turnaround times like a courier company, it’s a clear indication of its target clientele. Americans form the largest group of applicants, followed by China and Hong Kong, with dozens of other nationalities also on the list.

These “customers” also receive a highly favourable tax deal. New residents qualify for the “transitional residency exemption,” meaning they pay no New Zealand tax on most of their foreign income for their first 48 months in the country. Dividends, interest, rents, or other offshore investment income all sit outside the tax net for four years. While this exemption has existed since 2006, the government has recently sweetened the surrounding rules. Last year, adjustments were made specifically to carve out an exemption for those taxed on citizenship rather than residency—effectively targeting wealthy Americans who pay US taxes regardless of where they live. Adding to the appeal, New Zealand has no general capital gains tax, no inheritance tax, and no wealth tax. For individuals whose wealth primarily grows through capital gains, this combination is arguably one of the most attractive in the developed world.

Global Shifts and Australian Exodus: Fueling the Influx

Global shifts, like Dubai’s declining appeal, and Australia’s capital gains tax changes, are driving wealthy individuals and retirees to New Zealand, which offers a tax-friendly haven and frictionless entry for Australians.

New Zealand’s appeal is also being amplified by shifts in the global landscape for the mobile rich. Dubai, which spent the last decade positioning itself as a default base for the world’s millionaires, is now facing challenges. Its once-unquestionable “safe haven” pitch has been chipped away by geopolitical tensions, particularly the war with Iran. Henley and Partners, a firm tracking wealthy migration, reported a 41% jump in inquiries from UAE residents about alternative residences in a single quarter around the turn of the year. While not all are heading to Queenstown, a significant number of digital and tax nomads are seeking a new home, and it’s hard to find a country further removed from geopolitical drama than New Zealand.

Closer to home, Australians are also contributing to the influx, and they don’t even require a visa. Under the Trans-Tasman agreement, an Australian can move to New Zealand as easily as they could move to another Australian state. This frictionless border, which has historically seen regular New Zealanders move to Australia for better wages, now works in reverse. Australian retirees have long been drawn by the scenery and familiar culture, and the current exchange rate (one Australian dollar buys approximately NZ$1.20) makes retirement savings stretch roughly 20% further.

More recently, Australia’s own tax policy changes have become a recruitment tool for New Zealand. Canberra’s latest budget announced the scrapping of the 50% capital gains tax discount from mid-next year. For wealthy Australians sitting on decades of unrealized gains, a short flight to a country with no capital gains tax, coupled with a four-year tax holiday on foreign income while they reorganize their affairs, presents an incredibly attractive offer. New Zealand is often closer to many Australian cities than those cities are to places like Perth. In essence, New Zealand has become adept at “sucking up tech billionaires and wealthy Australian retirees by setting themselves up as a temporary tax haven, a tax campsite, if you will.”

What’s In It for New Zealand? The Economic Rationale

New Zealand benefits from these wealthy migrants through mandated investments, luxury spending, GST revenue, and minimal reliance on public services, providing capital and economic activity while many local workers leave.

While the world’s wealthiest enjoy their tax-advantaged bolt-holes, it’s fair to ask what New Zealand truly gains from attracting people it largely won’t tax. The public answer is simple: money. These wealthy migrants offer jobs, growth, and investments as part of their visa conditions. The growth category, for instance, mandates a NZ$5 million injection into New Zealand businesses and managed funds, providing crucial capital to a small economy that often needs it.

Once these migrants arrive, their spending on high-end houses, cars, boats, and luxury services generates income for local businesses and tradespeople, alongside a 15% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on most purchases. Furthermore, these wealthy migrants are relatively inexpensive for the government to host. They are unlikely to rely on welfare benefits or public housing, and they typically pay their own way through the private healthcare system when they fall ill. All of this is particularly appealing at a time when New Zealand is losing many of its own workers overseas—28,500 people moved to Australia alone last year, a significant drain on manpower and capital for such a small nation. Attracting wealthy migrants, therefore, provides an alternative way to inject money into the economy, even as its own citizens depart.

The Unintended Consequences: A Paradise Lost for Locals?

This strategy has led to an extreme housing crisis in places like Queenstown, where average house prices exceed NZ$1.9 million, making it unaffordable for essential local workers, despite a ban on most foreign property ownership.

Despite the economic benefits, New Zealand’s strategy is not without significant consequences, most visibly in its housing market. Queenstown, a picturesque resort town with limited industries beyond tourism, now boasts an average house price of over NZ$1.9 million—more than double the already unaffordable national average of about NZ$900,000. Unlike much of the country, Queenstown has not seen post-COVID price reductions, largely due to its popularity with wealthy migrants. Houses there sell for around 13 times what local earners make in a year, far exceeding the standard definition of “affordable” (three times annual income).

This has created a bizarre situation where the town cannot house the very people who keep it running. Stories have emerged of nurses, teachers, and police officers living in garages, sharing beds between shifts, or commuting from distant, cheaper towns. All the while, close to 14% of local homes sit empty for most of the year, serving as holiday homes or private bunkers. The mayor has even warned of “zombie neighborhood streets” filled with multi-million dollar houses, devoid of actual residents.

The government did attempt to address this. While reopening the housing market to foreign money, it maintained a ban on most non-residents buying property, but carved out a narrow exception: Golden Visa investors can purchase or build a single home worth at least NZ$5 million. This exception impacts a tiny fraction of the national housing stock (between 5,000 and 6,000 properties), and the Prime Minister called it a “happy compromise.” However, in places like Queenstown, if the only homes wealthy foreigners are allowed to buy are worth NZ$5 million or more, developers are incentivized to build homes exclusively in that ultra-luxury bracket, doing little to alleviate the affordability crisis for locals.

The Stickiness Problem and the Race to the Bottom

The four-year tax exemption raises concerns about “stickiness”; wealthy migrants may leave after it expires, contributing to a global “race to the bottom” in tax incentives, as other countries like Spain and Portugal scale back their golden visa programs.

Perhaps the biggest looming problem is “stickiness.” The four-year tax exemption eventually ends, at which point these residents fall into the ordinary tax system for their worldwide income. The government’s bet is that by then, they will have established roots—houses, children in local schools, money sunk into local funds—and will choose to stay and become regular taxpayers.

But this assumption might be flawed. A wealthy individual who has already moved countries to protect their money from one tax system has demonstrated a clear willingness to do so again. When the four-year exemption expires, a significant portion of these residents may simply run the same calculation, and a new “karma future” in places like Singapore, Monaco, or even a reformed Dubai, will happily host “round two.”

This creates a classic “prisoners’ dilemma” among countries vying for the same pool of mobile millionaires. Each country is individually better off offering a slightly sweeter deal than its neighbours, but if everyone keeps sweetening the pot, it inevitably becomes a race to the bottom, eroding tax bases and potentially fostering a bad reputation. Some countries have already decided the deal isn’t worth it:

  • Spain shut down its Golden Visa program last year, partly due to its impact on local housing.
  • The European Court of Justice struck down Malta’s citizenship-by-investment scheme over security and money laundering concerns.
  • Portugal entirely removed property from its program and extended the citizenship wait from five to ten years.

Australia is also moving in this direction, raising capital gains tax on its own wealthy residents. This puts Australia and New Zealand’s tax systems into direct competition for the same people across a border where citizens of either country can freely move and reside.

If New Zealand continues down this path, it risks quickly acquiring a “tax haven” reputation, as evidenced by a major Australian newspaper putting New Zealand on its front page as a tax haven the morning after Australia unveiled its capital gains tax changes. Furthermore, New Zealand faces an election later this year, with the main opposition party campaigning on a capital gains tax on property. This means the very settings attracting these wealthy migrants could shift within a couple of years of their arrival.

So, while New Zealand may be enjoying the capital inflows for now, there’s a real danger that this capital could just as easily flow out again, leaving behind a housing crisis and a lingering question: Did this strategy truly fix the core economic problems, or merely apply a temporary band-aid that will eventually rip off, leaving deeper wounds? The paradox of New Zealand continues, a beautiful country caught between the dreams of global billionaires and the struggles of its own people.

‘Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me’와 함께하는 유쾌한 뉴스 탐험

2017년 이후 젊은 여성들은 ‘미투(Me Too)’ 운동, 생식 건강권(reproductive health care access) 논의, ‘로 대 웨이드(Roe v.

‘우리 생명을 위한 행진(March for Our Lives)’, 기후 파업(climate strikes), ‘흑인의 생명도 소중하다(Black Lives Matter)’ 운동 등이 대표적입니다.

(Active Investor Plus Visa)
